Description
This is half of a large vintage mid century plan chest, which we think was used by an artist for their materials. As the need to store maps and documents is quite unusual these days, we decided to turn the two halves into coffee tables.
This is the upper half, so after stripping off some of the most stubborn white paint that we have ever come across, we were able to keep the original top and added hairpin legs to the bottom. It was then painted in diluted black emulsion to create a stain, lightly sanded to allow some of the wood to show through, and given several coats of dark wax. Except for the drawers which were left in the natural wood and finished with antique wax. I then added a star design tile stencil to the top in burnt umber and copper paint. The finishing touch was the addition of wrought iron cup handles and brass label holders to the drawers.
This is a quirky unique upcycled piece that not only looks amazing but could hold an awful lot of clutter, paper work, magazines, books, or CDs and DVDs – if anyone still has such things anymore?!
