Fischel Bentwood chair. When Thonet’s patent for the Bentwood chair expired in 1871, DG Fischel began to produce Bentwood furniture in Niemes in Czechoslovakia. This is one of the chairs he produced, as can be seen by the label still attached to the seat, although it probably dates from the early 20th century.
The chair has had a minor repair to the frame to stabilise it and was then painted in a mid grey with several coats of neutral wax applied. The seat and backrest have been stripped, restored and Briwaxed in medium brown for protection.
It is now a solid, stylish and comfortable seat, and I can vouch for this personally as I have been ‘testing it out’ rather a lot lately in the heat at the workshop!
